Entrepreneurship Story

One memory I have of a time where I was exposed to entrepreneurship of some sort was around the age of 10. My sister has been very crafty her whole life and has always enjoyed making things, especially jewelry. When we were kids she would spend all of her chore money at craft stores so that she had supplies to make her jewelry. At first, she just made things to give to her friends and family, but eventually she decided to begin trying to make profit from her creations. My sister would set up a jewelry stand in various places and sell her bracelets, necklaces, and earrings at reasonable prices. Although she left her jewelry business in her childhood, she still enjoys making things as presents for friends and family, I've attached a picture of a bracelet she made me recently.

I enrolled in ENT 3003 because it is an approved elective for my major: Applied Physiology and Kinesiology. Although I had other options for electives, I rarely have the opportunity to take business classes in order to gain experience in the field. The main thing I hope to gain from this class is a changed perspective, I've never felt that I have the creative mindset to be in the business world so I'd like to see the ways in which this class can pull the creativity out of me and start making me see things in a different way.

  1. The story of your sister's jewelry stand sort of reminds me of the typical lemonade stand one? I do have one question: was she successful in her business? I also took this class for similar reasons. It's not requited for my major or my college, but I thought it would be a great opportunity to take a business class over the summer when I am not swamped with psychology or pre med classes.

  2. Many girls in my classes growing up liked to make bracelets as your sister, although none pursued attempting to sell them for profit. Now a days my younger sister is following in the makeup trend, doing videos on her social media and selling products in the digital age. Entrepreneurship shows itself in people pretty early on and it is not too hard to see which people are going to be working for themselves or creators from a pretty young age.

  3. Hi Ashlyn, It is interesting to see how you were exposed to entrepreneurship at such a young age. Those little-kid type businesses are really relevant to a lot of kids growing up from things like lemonade stands, to bracelet making, and things such as that. It's so interesting to see that in some ways we started our entrepreneurship journey off at a very young age and now will hopefully expand on our experiences and creativeness.
